In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, what spell erases Hermione’s parents’ memories?

The story behind the answer

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Hermione uses Obliviate to erase her parents’ memories of her.

At the beginning of the film, Hermione modifies her parents’ memories so they no longer remember having a daughter. She does this to protect them from being targeted during Voldemort’s rise and the persecution of Harry’s allies. The sequence shows her parents leaving their home while family photographs change.

Obliviate is the incantation associated with the Memory Charm. In the film, Hermione explains that the spell is intended to remove memories, although the story later establishes that she plans to restore her parents’ memories after the danger has passed.

The spell is often confused with Confundus, which causes confusion rather than erasing memories. Expelliarmus disarms an opponent, while Petrificus Totalus temporarily binds the body. These spells have different effects and are used in other scenes.
