In “Hansel and Gretel,” Gretel pushes the witch into the oven. The witch intends to bake the children, but Gretel tricks her into demonstrating how to lean toward the oven, then shoves her inside and bolts the door.
The scene occurs after the witch has lured Hansel and Gretel into a house made of bread, cake, and sugar. She locks Hansel in a stable to fatten him and forces Gretel to work for her. When the witch decides to cook Hansel, she orders Gretel to check whether the oven is hot enough.
Gretel pretends not to understand the instruction and asks the witch to show her. The deception reverses the power relationship: once the witch bends toward the oven, Gretel pushes her in. The children then free themselves and discover the witch’s treasure. The story was collected by the Brothers Grimm and first published in 1812 as KHM 15, or tale number 15 in their collection.
