In Halo: Combat Evolved, what is the name of the first campaign mission?

In Halo: Combat Evolved, the first campaign mission is called “The Pillar of Autumn.” The mission begins aboard the UNSC ship of the same name as it arrives at Installation 04 while being pursued by the Covenant.

The level introduces the player to Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, Captain Jacob Keyes, and Cortana. After the ship is attacked, Chief fights through its damaged corridors and helps launch an escape pod toward the Halo ring. The mission ends with the player reaching the ring’s surface.

The title can be confused with the ship itself, because both share the name The Pillar of Autumn. It is also distinct from “Arrival,” the opening cinematic that precedes the playable mission. Later missions move the action from the crashed escape pods and ring surface to locations such as the Truth and Reconciliation and the Silent Cartographer.

Halo: Combat Evolved was released for the original Xbox in 2001 and established the campaign structure used by later entries in the series.
