In Greek mythology, Ariadne was abandoned by Theseus on Naxos.
Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos and helped Theseus survive the Labyrinth. She gave him a thread, or another guiding device in some versions, so he could retrace his path after killing the Minotaur. Theseus then left Crete with Ariadne and the rescued Athenians.
The next part of the story differs across ancient sources. In the most familiar tradition, Theseus abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos while she slept or after bringing her there. The god Dionysus later found her and made her his wife. Some accounts instead say that Dionysus ordered Theseus to leave her.
Ariadne is often remembered only for the thread, but her role is broader: she is the royal daughter who enables the hero’s escape. Naxos is also sometimes called Dia in older mythological traditions, which explains why different retellings can appear to name different islands.
