In Greek mythology, Attica was the region traditionally united under Theseus after his return from Crete.
Attica is the southeastern Greek region centered on Athens. Later traditions credited Theseus with synoecism, the political unification of the separate communities of Attica into one state associated with Athens. This achievement was presented as a major part of his legacy, alongside his adventures against monsters and brigands.
The Minotaur episode is therefore connected to a broader Athenian foundation narrative. Theseus is remembered not only as the hero who entered the Labyrinth but also as a ruler who strengthened Athens’s political identity. Historians treat these accounts as legendary traditions rather than straightforward contemporary records of an actual unification carried out by a single historical king.
