In Greek mythology, Knossos was the Cretan location traditionally linked to the Minotaur’s Labyrinth.
Knossos was a major Bronze Age settlement on Crete and the center of the palace complex associated with King Minos in later tradition. The complex’s many rooms, corridors, storage areas, and stairways helped inspire the ancient and modern association between Knossos and the Labyrinth.
Archaeology has not proven that a literal maze matching the myth existed at Knossos. The connection is a combination of literary tradition, the scale and complexity of the palace, and later interpretation. The mythic Labyrinth should therefore be distinguished from the excavated archaeological site, even though Knossos remains the most famous real-world location connected with the story.
