In Greek mythology, what was the name of the festival established in Athens to honor Theseus?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology and Athenian tradition, the festival established to honor Theseus was called the Theseia.

The Theseia was a civic festival celebrating Theseus as a major Athenian hero. His reputation included unifying Attica, defeating dangerous enemies, and ending the tribute sent to Crete by killing the Minotaur. The festival therefore connected the Labyrinth story with Athens’s broader heroic identity.

The name is derived from Theseus, just as other Greek festivals were named for gods or heroes. It should not be confused with the Panathenaia, Athens’s major festival for Athena, or the Dionysia, festivals dedicated to Dionysus and strongly associated with drama.

The Theseia was a historical Athenian commemoration of a mythic hero, not a location inside the Labyrinth. Its existence shows how Theseus’s Cretan adventure became part of Athens’s public cultural memory.
