In Greek mythology, what test did Theseus complete before sailing to Crete to face the Minotaur?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Theseus lifted a rock hiding tokens from his father before sailing to Crete to face the Minotaur.

Theseus was raised by his mother, Aethra, in Troezen. Aegeus left a sword and sandals beneath a large rock and instructed Aethra to reveal them when Theseus was strong enough to move it. These objects would identify him as Aegeus’s son when he reached Athens.

After completing the feat, Theseus travelled overland to Athens and later became involved in the Cretan expedition. The episode establishes his heroic strength before the Labyrinth story begins.

This test is unrelated to several other famous Greek quests. Theseus did not defeat the Nemean Lion, solve the Sphinx’s riddle, or capture the Golden Fleece. Those achievements belong to Heracles or other heroes in separate myths.
