In Greek mythology, on which island was Zeus secretly raised after his birth?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus was secretly raised on the island of Crete after his birth.

His mother, Rhea, hid him there to protect him from Cronus, who had swallowed his older children because he feared a prophecy that one would overthrow him. According to Cretan traditions, the infant Zeus was concealed in a cave, commonly identified as the Dictaean Cave or the Idaean Cave.

Different ancient writers gave different details about his guardians. The Curetes were said to clash their weapons to hide the baby’s cries, while the goat Amalthea was associated with nourishing him. These traditions connect Zeus closely with Crete, although Greek mythology also places important events in many other regions.

Crete is the largest Greek island and was home to the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. The mythological birthplace of Zeus should not be confused with Mount Olympus, which became his divine residence and the home of the Olympian gods.
