In Greek mythology, Athena emerged fully armed from Zeus’s head.
According to a famous version of her birth, Zeus swallowed Metis, a Titan goddess associated with wisdom, after learning that her future child might become more powerful than him. Zeus later suffered an immense headache. Hephaestus, the divine smith, split Zeus’s head open with an axe, and Athena emerged wearing armor and carrying weapons.
The story explains Athena’s close association with intelligence, strategy, and practical wisdom. Her unusual birth also presents her as a goddess connected directly to Zeus rather than born from a mortal mother. Some ancient sources vary in details, including who opened Zeus’s head and how Metis’s pregnancy was understood.
Athena’s birth is often confused with the birth of Aphrodite, who in one major tradition arose from sea foam. Athena’s principal city was Athens, and the owl and olive tree were among her best-known symbols.
