In 'Godfather Death,' what profession does Death's godson become?

The story behind the answer

In “Godfather Death,” Death’s godson becomes a physician.

The story begins with a poor man seeking a godfather for his thirteenth child. He rejects God because he believes God allows the rich to prosper while the poor suffer, and he rejects the Devil because the Devil represents temptation. Death becomes the child’s godfather and promises to guide his future.

When the boy grows up, Death gives him a special medical advantage. Whenever the young man visits a sick patient, Death’s position reveals the outcome: standing at the patient’s head means the patient will recover, while standing at the feet means death is near. This allows the godson to become a celebrated physician.

The physician eventually abuses the gift by reversing a patient’s position and later tries to deceive Death again. Death shows him a cave filled with candles representing human lives. The tale ends with the physician’s own candle going out. “Godfather Death” is KHM 44 and belongs to ATU 332, a widespread European tale type about a physician who learns the limits of cheating death.
