In German superstition, a chimney sweep is considered a lucky sight, especially when encountered in the morning.
The belief reflects the practical importance of chimney sweeps in older German households. A clean chimney reduced the risk of soot buildup, fires, and dangerous smoke, so the arrival of a sweep could be associated with safety and household well-being. Seeing one was therefore turned into a positive omen.
The tradition is often summarized by the German saying that seeing a chimney sweep brings luck. In some versions, touching a button on one’s clothing after spotting the sweep is said to preserve the luck. The belief became recognizable across parts of Europe, not only in Germany, because chimney sweeping was an important urban trade.
The custom does not mean that chimney sweeps were viewed as magical figures. It combines a useful occupation with older habits of reading everyday encounters as omens. Modern central heating has reduced the sweep’s everyday visibility, but the lucky image remains common in German New Year cards and figurines.
