In George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel A Game of Thrones, Jon Snow’s direwolf is called Ghost.
Ghost is the white-furred, red-eyed runt of the six direwolf pups discovered by the Stark children near Winterfell. Jon chooses him because the pup is separated from the others and appears different, a trait that mirrors Jon’s own position within the Stark family. The direwolves are unusually intelligent and develop strong bonds with their human companions.
Ghost accompanies Jon when he joins the Night’s Watch and becomes especially important during Jon’s life beyond the Wall. Unlike some of the other direwolves, Ghost is notably silent, rarely making a sound. This quiet behavior helps distinguish him from Grey Wind, Summer, Shaggydog, Lady, and Nymeria.
A common mix-up is confusing Ghost with Grey Wind, Robb Stark’s direwolf, or with Summer, Bran Stark’s companion. The name also carries symbolic weight: Ghost’s pale appearance and separation from the pack reflect Jon’s outsider status.
