In Genesis, what was Noah told to put on the Ark’s roof?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah was told to make a window for the roof of the Ark.

Genesis 6:16 describes the ark’s structure and instructs Noah to finish it with a “window” or opening near the top. English translations differ in how they render the underlying Hebrew term, so some say “roof,” “opening,” or “light,” but the familiar answer in many English versions is a window.

The opening becomes important later in the narrative. After the waters recede, Noah opens the window and sends out a raven. He then sends a dove several times to determine whether the floodwater has gone down from the ground.

The roof opening should not be confused with the ark’s door, which Genesis mentions separately. Nor does the passage describe a chimney or a modern glass skylight. The text presents a functional opening associated with light, ventilation, and observing the condition of the land after the flood.
