In Genesis, how old is Noah when the Flood waters come upon the earth?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah is 600 years old when the Flood waters come upon the earth.

Genesis 7:6 states that Noah is six hundred years old when the Flood occurs. The age appears after the instructions to enter the Ark and before the narrative describes the waters arriving. It is one of the account’s precise chronological markers.

Genesis also gives ages for members of Noah’s family at other points, although it does not provide a complete modern-style timeline. Noah’s three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—are named earlier in the story, and their family lines become important in later chapters.

Noah’s age at the Flood should not be confused with his age at death. Genesis 9:29 says that Noah lives 950 years. The two numbers describe different events and are both part of the biblical chronology.
