In Friends, Phoebe Buffay usually plays the guitar while performing at Central Perk.
Phoebe’s guitar performances are a recurring part of the series, especially during her informal concerts at the coffeehouse. She accompanies herself while singing original songs, many of which combine simple melodies with deliberately odd, comic, or unexpectedly dark lyrics.
Her best-known performance is “Smelly Cat,” a song about a cat whose odor causes other people to reject it. Phoebe also sings songs such as “The Holiday Song” and “You’re So Great,” using an eccentric performance style that contrasts with the polished music normally associated with coffeehouse entertainers.
Phoebe’s guitar playing is sometimes mistaken for a ukulele because of the instrument’s compact appearance in some scenes. The show identifies her instrument as a guitar, and her playing is part of her established identity as a musician.
