In Frank Herbert’s Dune, the desert planet is called Arrakis.
Arrakis is also known as Dune, the title’s source. Its surface is dominated by vast sand seas, extreme heat, and giant sandworms. Despite its harsh environment, the planet is politically and economically crucial because it is the only known source of melange, commonly called spice.
Spice extends life, improves awareness, and enables space navigation. Control of Arrakis therefore means control of the most valuable substance in the Imperium. The Fremen, Arrakis’s native desert people, have adapted to its environment and play a decisive role in the story.
Caladan is the ocean world ruled by House Atreides before its move to Arrakis. Giedi Prime is associated with House Harkonnen, while Salusa Secundus is the harsh training world of the Sardaukar. Dune is generally classified as science fiction rather than fantasy, but its messianic themes, prophecy, and world-building often make it relevant to fantasy-fiction trivia.
