In Filipino superstition, sweeping the floor at night is traditionally avoided because it may drive away good fortune.
The belief treats the home’s accumulated luck as something that can be physically swept out after dark. In some families, the warning is phrased more specifically: sweeping at night may remove prosperity or prevent good fortune from entering the household. The practice is part of a larger group of Filipino beliefs about timing, cleanliness, entrances, and household harmony.
This custom should not be confused with a practical rule about sanitation. In tropical climates, households may still clean at night when necessary, and modern families differ widely in whether they follow the belief.
Similar “do not sweep after sunset” traditions appear elsewhere in Asia, but their explanations are not identical. The Filipino version is usually framed around luck and prosperity rather than a single religious command.
