In Fawlty Towers, what is Sybil's best friend's name?

The story behind the answer

In Fawlty Towers, Sybil’s best friend is named Audrey.

Audrey is Sybil Fawlty’s lifelong best friend and is usually heard during Sybil’s long, gossip-filled telephone conversations. Those calls give Sybil a refuge from the hotel’s constant disasters and from her difficult relationship with Basil.

Audrey is not one of the hotel’s regular employees or residents, which is why viewers may remember her mainly as a voice on the telephone. She appears in person in “The Anniversary,” where her troubled relationship with her husband, George, becomes part of the episode’s story.

The character is easy to confuse with other women connected to the hotel, including Polly Sherman, the maid and waitress, and the elderly residents Miss Tibbs and Miss Gatsby. Audrey is different: she belongs to Sybil’s life outside the hotel. Sybil’s attempts to comfort her often produce the familiar exchange in which Sybil sympathetically responds, “Ohhh, I knowwww...”
