In Disney's The Princess and the Frog, Disney's first African-American princess is Tiana.
Tiana is the central character of the 2009 animated musical, which is set largely in New Orleans during the Jazz Age. She is an ambitious aspiring restaurateur who works toward opening her own restaurant. Her story adapts elements of the traditional frog-prince tale while giving the heroine a distinct professional goal.
Tiana is sometimes confused with Princess and the Frog characters such as Prince Naveen or Charlotte La Bouff. Naveen is the prince whose transformation drives the plot, while Charlotte is Tiana's friend. Tiana remains the film's protagonist and the first Black princess introduced in Disney's official princess franchise.
The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker and featured songs by Randy Newman. It was also notable for returning Disney to a traditionally hand-drawn animated feature after several computer-animated productions.
