In Disney's The Little Mermaid, what is the name of Ariel's signature song?

The story behind the answer

In Disney's The Little Mermaid, Ariel's signature song is “Part of Your World.” Ariel sings it in the grotto where she keeps human objects, explaining her fascination with the world beyond the sea and her desire to belong there.

The song was written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. Its dramatic purpose is to define Ariel's goal before the plot advances: she wants to explore the human world, even though her father, King Triton, forbids her from doing so. The reprise later reflects her changed situation after she becomes human.

“Under the Sea” is the film's other major musical number, but Sebastian sings it to persuade Ariel to appreciate life under the ocean. “Kiss the Girl” is sung during the romantic boat scene, and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” belongs to Ursula. The 1989 movie helped launch the Disney Renaissance and won Academy Awards for its score and original song.
