Disney's original animated The Lion King won two Academy Awards.
At the 67th Academy Awards, the film won Best Original Song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” written by Elton John and Tim Rice, with music by John. It also won Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer.
The movie received three nominations in total. Its other nominated song was “Hakuna Matata,” written by Elton John and Tim Rice. The nomination count is sometimes confused with the number of awards because The Lion King had several major songs and a highly celebrated soundtrack.
The film's Oscar success reflected the importance of music to its storytelling. The score, songs, and vocal performances helped establish the movie as a major animated musical rather than simply an adventure story set in Africa.
