In Disney's Mulan, Donny Osmond sang the English version of “I'll Make a Man Out of You.”
The song is performed during a training montage in which Captain Li Shang prepares a group of inexperienced recruits for military service. Osmond supplied the singing voice for Shang, while BD Wong provided Shang's speaking voice in the original English version.
This split between speaking and singing performers is a frequent source of confusion. Osmond was not the character's regular speaking actor, and the song is not sung by Mulan's voice actor, Ming-Na Wen. The contrast reflects a common practice in animated musicals, where specialized performers handle different vocal demands.
Matthew Wilder wrote the music and David Zippel wrote the lyrics. Mulan was released in 1998 and drew on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, though its characters, plot details, and musical structure are Disney's adaptation.
