In Disney's Mulan, the small red dragon who accompanies Mulan is Mushu.
Mushu is a fast-talking guardian spirit who tries to restore his family standing by helping Mulan. He becomes involved after Mulan takes her father's place in the imperial army, disguising herself as a man to protect him from military conscription.
Mushu is voiced in the original English version by Eddie Murphy. His comic role contrasts with the serious military danger faced by Mulan and the threat posed by Shan Yu's invading army. He also helps create the film's mixture of action, comedy, and musical storytelling.
Mushu is sometimes confused with Cri-Kee, the lucky cricket who also travels with Mulan. Cri-Kee is an insect, not a dragon. The film's story draws loosely on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, while its characters and songs were created for Disney's animated adaptation.
