In Disney's Mulan, the ancestor guardian who accompanies Mulan is Mushu.
Mushu is a small red dragon assigned to protect Mulan after she secretly takes her father's place in the Chinese army. He hopes that helping her will restore his status among the Fa family ancestors. Although he is boastful and often improvises, he provides practical assistance, comic relief, and encouragement throughout Mulan's military training and battles.
Eddie Murphy supplied Mushu's original English voice, giving the character a rapid, comedic style. Mushu is distinct from Cri-Kee, the lucky cricket who also travels with Mulan. The film does not portray Mushu as one of the enormous traditional dragons seen in Chinese mythology; he is a compact household guardian within the movie's fantasy world.
