In Disney's Hercules, the satyr who trains Hercules to become a hero is Philoctetes.
Philoctetes, usually called Phil, is a veteran trainer who agrees to teach Hercules after learning that the young man is the son of Zeus. Phil lives in isolation and initially resists returning to hero training, but he eventually becomes Hercules's mentor and friend.
The character is loosely based on Philoctetes from Greek mythology, though Disney substantially changes his role and personality. In the ancient tradition, Philoctetes is a skilled archer associated with the Trojan War; in the film, he is a short, irritable satyr with expertise in heroic training.
Danny DeVito provides Phil's original English voice. A common mix-up is Hades, who is the film's villain, or Pegasus, Hercules's winged horse. Neither character trains Hercules. Phil's lessons help Hercules prepare for the climactic battle with the Titan threat.
