Chris Buck directed Disney’s Frozen alongside Jennifer Lee.

Buck and Lee shared directing duties on the 2013 animated feature. Lee also wrote the screenplay and became the first woman to direct a Walt Disney Animation Studios feature by herself or with a co-director, depending on how the credit is described across Disney’s production history.

Buck had extensive animation experience before Frozen. He co-directed Tarzan, released by Disney in 1999, and later co-directed Frozen II with Lee. Lee’s writing helped shift Frozen away from a simple romantic-rescue story toward a narrative centered on the relationship between sisters Anna and Elsa.

The directors worked with songwriters, animators, and visual-development artists to create Arendelle’s Nordic setting and Elsa’s ice powers. Their collaboration continued on Frozen II, released in 2019.
