In Disney's Fantasia, which classical composition accompanies the animated appearance of a magical broom?

The story behind the answer

In Disney's Fantasia, “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” accompanies the animated appearance of a magical broom.

The segment follows Mickey Mouse as an apprentice who uses a spell to make a broom carry water for him. Mickey loses control of the enchantment when the broom multiplies, creating a flood that he cannot stop. The wizard Yen Sid eventually returns and breaks the spell.

The music is Paul Dukas's symphonic poem “L'Apprenti sorcier,” composed in 1897 and based on Goethe's poem “The Sorcerer's Apprentice.” Disney's 1940 film made the piece internationally famous and permanently linked it with Mickey Mouse's image.

The segment is sometimes confused with “Night on Bald Mountain,” the darker Fantasia sequence featuring the demon Chernabog. Fantasia combines animated imagery with classical music, and its segments are presented as a concert program rather than as one continuous conventional narrative.
