Disney's original animated Beauty and the Beast premiered in 1991.
The film follows Belle, a young woman who becomes imprisoned in an enchanted castle and gradually discovers the humanity behind the Beast's appearance. It was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise and became a major critical and commercial success.
Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won two Oscars for its music: Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the title song.
The 1991 animated movie is distinct from Disney's live-action remake released in 2017. Both versions tell the same broad story, but the question refers to the original animated feature and its first release year.
