In Disney’s 1967 film The Jungle Book, the tiger who hunts Mowgli is Shere Khan.
Shere Khan is the film’s principal antagonist and is voiced by George Sanders. He regards Mowgli as a dangerous human presence in the jungle and repeatedly insists that the boy must leave. His fearsome reputation makes the other animals wary of challenging him.
The character comes from Rudyard Kipling’s original stories, where Shere Khan is also a Bengal tiger and a persistent enemy of Mowgli. Disney retained the name and basic role but shaped the character into a polished, highly articulate villain for the animated musical.
A common mix-up is confusing Shere Khan with Kaa, the python. Kaa also threatens Mowgli, but he is a separate character. Shere Khan is the tiger, while Kaa is the snake. The film’s famous final confrontation brings Shere Khan face to face with Mowgli near the jungle village.
