In Disney’s 1967 film The Jungle Book, Shere Khan’s loyal assistant is named Tabaqui.
Tabaqui is a small, nervous animal who accompanies Shere Khan and helps him gather information about Mowgli. He is deferential toward the tiger and frequently tries to please him, but his fearful behavior contrasts with Shere Khan’s confidence and authority.
The Disney character is based on Tabaqui from Rudyard Kipling’s Mowgli stories. In the original fiction, Tabaqui is a jackal and a hanger-on of Shere Khan. Disney changes the character’s visual presentation and comic manner, but keeps the basic relationship between the two characters.
Tabaqui is sometimes confused with the vultures Buzzie, Flaps, Ziggy, and Dizzy, who appear in a different part of the animated film. Those birds are not Shere Khan’s assistants.
