In Diana Wynne Jones’s fantasy novel Howl’s Moving Castle, what curse transforms Sophie Hatter into an old woman?

The story behind the answer

In Howl’s Moving Castle, the Witch of the Waste’s curse transforms Sophie Hatter into an old woman.

Sophie is the eldest of three sisters and works in her family’s hat shop. The Witch of the Waste visits the shop and curses Sophie, partly because she believes Sophie has a connection with the wizard Howl. Sophie leaves home and eventually finds refuge in Howl’s magical moving castle.

The curse affects Sophie’s appearance but does not completely control her personality or choices. She often speaks and acts with confidence after becoming old, and the change helps her step outside the passive role she initially accepts for herself.

Readers sometimes attribute the transformation to Howl or to the castle because both are central to the story’s magic. However, the Witch of the Waste is the character who casts the curse. The novel was published in 1986 and later inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s 2004 animated film.
