In DC Comics, what is Superman’s Kryptonian birth name?

The story behind the answer

In DC Comics, Superman’s Kryptonian birth name is Kal-El.

Superman was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster and first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. He was born on the planet Krypton to Jor-El and Lara. Shortly before Krypton’s destruction, his parents placed him in a spacecraft that carried him to Earth.

On Earth, the infant Kal-El was found and raised by the Kents in Smallville, Kansas. They named him Clark Kent, the civilian identity he uses while living among humans. As Superman, he protects Earth using powers caused by his Kryptonian biology and exposure to Earth’s yellow sun.

Kal-El is sometimes confused with Jor-El, who is Superman’s father, or Kara Zor-El, the Kryptonian name of Supergirl. The suffix “-El” is shared by several members of Superman’s Kryptonian family and is part of the character’s established Kryptonian naming tradition.
