In Dark Phoenix, who directed the 2019 X-Men film?

The story behind the answer

Simon Kinberg directed Dark Phoenix, the 2019 X-Men film. It was Kinberg’s feature-directing debut after years as a writer and producer on the franchise.

Kinberg had been closely involved with the series before directing. He wrote or co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and X-Men: Apocalypse, and served as a producer on several films.

Dark Phoenix adapts elements of the Dark Phoenix Saga, one of the best-known storylines from Marvel’s X-Men comics. The film follows Jean Grey after a space-rescue mission causes her powers to grow beyond her control.

The cast includes Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Dark Phoenix was the final main X-Men film released by 20th Century Fox before Disney completed its acquisition of the company’s film assets.
