In Creed III, what distinction did the film have within the Rocky franchise?

The story behind the answer

Creed III was the first film in the Rocky franchise to appear without Rocky Balboa.

Sylvester Stallone did not reprise Rocky in Creed III, although he remained involved as a producer. The film instead focuses entirely on Adonis Creed’s life, career, and confrontation with his former friend Damian Anderson.

Michael B. Jordan directed the film in addition to starring as Adonis. This made Creed III a significant transition point: the story continued within the same fictional boxing universe while moving beyond the original central character.

The earlier Creed films included Rocky as a mentor figure. Creed III therefore differs from them structurally, even though it retains familiar themes involving legacy, rivalry, family, and redemption.
