Nick Young’s mother is named Eleanor in Crazy Rich Asians.
Michelle Yeoh plays Eleanor Young, the formidable matriarch of Nick’s wealthy Singaporean family. Nick, played by Henry Golding, brings his American girlfriend Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, to Singapore for a wedding. Rachel soon learns that Nick’s family is far richer and more socially prominent than he had suggested.
Eleanor’s resistance to Rachel is central to the film’s family conflict. Her concerns involve family expectations, cultural identity, and Rachel’s background as a Chinese American raised by a single mother. The character is adapted from Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel, although the film makes some changes to the source material. Jon M. Chu directed the 2018 movie, which was notable as the first Hollywood film in decades to feature an all-Asian principal cast.
