In Christopher Paolini’s fantasy novel Eragon, Eragon’s dragon is named Saphira.
Eragon discovers a mysterious blue stone in the Spine, but it hatches into a dragon named Saphira. Her hatching makes Eragon a Dragon Rider, a role once associated with the protectors and rulers of Alagaësia.
Saphira can communicate telepathically with Eragon and develops rapidly after hatching. Together they flee from the agents of Galbatorix, the tyrannical king who seeks to control or destroy the remaining Dragon Riders.
Saphira is sometimes confused with other dragons in the Inheritance Cycle. Glaedr is Oromis’s gold dragon, while Shruikan is the enormous black dragon controlled by Galbatorix. Arya is an elf and diplomat, not a dragon.
