In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Sabrina's familiar is named Salem. Salem is a black cat who accompanies Sabrina Spellman and serves as her supernatural companion in the Netflix series.
The character comes from the wider Sabrina mythology, where Salem has appeared in Archie Comics and earlier screen adaptations. However, the Netflix version changes some familiar details. In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Salem is not a transformed human witch as in the popular 1996 sitcom; he is presented as a familiar who communicates largely through animal behaviour and magical or telepathic means.
The series premiered on Netflix on October 26, 2018, with Kiernan Shipka playing Sabrina. Salem is often confused with Jiji, the cat from Kiki's Delivery Service, or Binx, the cat associated with Hocus Pocus. Thackery is also linked to a bewitched cat in Hocus Pocus, but none of those characters is Sabrina's familiar. Salem's role is to protect Sabrina and remain connected to the Spellman household.
