In Chappie, the police robot gains the name Chappie after being given consciousness.
Chappie begins as Scout 22, a damaged police robot scheduled for destruction. Engineer Deon Wilson installs experimental software that gives the machine a developing mind, and Yolandi and Ninja then raise him as if he were a child.
The name “Chappie” reflects the character’s childlike identity and the way he learns language, behavior, and morality from the people around him. His education is complicated because his guardians are criminals who want to use his abilities.
Chappie is played through performance capture by Sharlto Copley, while Dev Patel plays Deon. The film was directed by Neill Blomkamp and released in 2015. Moose is a different, heavily armed robot created by Vincent Moore.
