In Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones, the secret society of demon hunters is called the Shadowhunters.
Shadowhunters are a race of human-angel hybrids who protect the ordinary world from demons and police supernatural conflicts. They are also called Nephilim, a term connected with their angelic origin. Their society is organized around the Clave, a governing body that makes laws and oversees Shadowhunter institutions.
The novel follows Clary Fray after she discovers that the hidden supernatural world exists alongside New York City. Her introduction to Shadowhunters, including Jace Wayland, changes her understanding of her family and her own identity. Runes, marks placed on the skin, give Shadowhunters special abilities.
The terms in the series can be confusing. “Downworlders” refers broadly to supernatural peoples such as warlocks, vampires, and werewolves, while “Mundanes” is the Shadowhunter term for ordinary humans. The Clave is the government, not the name of the demon-hunting people themselves.
