In Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones, Clary Fray’s full first name is Clarissa.
Clary is the nickname used by Clarissa Adele Fray, the main human character at the beginning of the Mortal Instruments series. Her life changes when she witnesses a group of Shadowhunters pursuing a demon at a New York City club. The discovery leads her into the hidden world of demon hunters, Downworlders, and ancient family secrets.
The shortened form “Clary” is used so consistently that readers can overlook the character’s formal name. It is also easy to confuse Clarissa with Cassandra Clare, the author’s pen name; the names are not the same person. City of Bones was first published in 2007 and begins the six-book Mortal Instruments sequence. Clary’s relationship to the Shadowhunter world, especially her connection to her mother Jocelyn, drives much of the novel’s mystery.
