In Canada, on which day of the year is Labour Day observed?

The story behind the answer

In Canada, Labour Day is observed on the first Monday in September.

The Canadian holiday shares its September timing with the United States Labor Day observance. It is a nationwide statutory holiday, meaning that employment rules and closures are governed through federal, provincial, and territorial systems rather than by one single nationwide labor code.

Canadian Labour Day grew from nineteenth-century campaigns for shorter working hours and recognition of workers’ organizations. One important early event was the Toronto workers’ demonstration of 1872, which supported printers seeking a shorter workweek and helped push the federal government toward legal recognition of trade unions.

Labour Day is often associated with the end of summer, the return of schools, and the start of the autumn work and sports calendar. Its date should not be confused with May 1, known internationally as International Workers’ Day or Labour Day in many countries.
