Molly Hooper is the pathologist who works with Sherlock at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in BBC’s Sherlock. Louise Brealey plays Molly throughout the series.
Molly provides Sherlock with access to bodies and medical information during investigations. Her professional expertise is important to cases, even though Sherlock often treats her awkwardly and focuses on deductions rather than emotional courtesy.
The character also has a significant personal connection to Sherlock. Molly develops feelings for him, while Sherlock gradually demonstrates that he values her deeply, particularly in moments of danger and crisis. Her laboratory and workplace therefore serve both investigative and dramatic functions.
Molly is sometimes confused with Sally Donovan, a police detective who works at Scotland Yard. Donovan is a member of the Metropolitan Police, whereas Molly is a hospital pathologist. Mary Morstan is John Watson’s wife, and Janine Hawkins is connected to Charles Augustus Magnussen.
