In BBC Dragons' Den, which Dragon previously chaired the retail chain Ryman?

The story behind the answer

Theo Paphitis previously chaired the British stationery retailer Ryman.

Paphitis acquired Ryman in 1995 and became closely associated with its expansion as a high-street stationery chain. He later built a wider retail portfolio and became known publicly through his appearances as an investor on BBC Dragons' Den.

His business career began in retail and property, and he has also held interests in brands including Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue. These ventures are distinct companies, although they are often mentioned together when describing his business empire.

Paphitis joined Dragons' Den in the programme's first series in 2005 and became one of its most recognisable early Dragons. Ryman is a stationery retailer, not a financial-services company despite the similarity between its name and the word “ryman,” an old term for a clerk or writer.
