In Assassin’s Creed, Al Mualim serves as Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad’s mentor in Masyaf.
Al Mualim is the elder who leads the Assassin Brotherhood from its mountain stronghold in the Holy Land. After Altaïr violates the Brotherhood’s principles during an early mission, Al Mualim reduces him to the lowest rank and assigns a series of assassination targets as a path to redemption.
The mentor’s name means “the teacher” in Arabic, reflecting his role as a guide and authority figure. Masyaf, the Brotherhood’s headquarters, is one of the game’s recurring locations and provides the setting for important story revelations.
Players may confuse Al Mualim with Altaïr’s fellow Assassins or with the Templar targets sent by the mentor. His position is distinct: he initially directs Altaïr’s missions and controls the order’s base. The character’s relationship with Altaïr becomes increasingly important as the plot develops.
