In Assassin's Creed Unity, which major historical revolution forms the game's setting?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Unity is set during the French Revolution.

The game follows Arno Dorian, a young Assassin operating in Paris as political unrest transforms France. Its historical setting begins in 1789, the year commonly associated with the Revolution's outbreak, and continues through the upheavals that followed. Parisian crowds, political factions, and major landmarks provide the backdrop for Arno's missions.

The French Revolution was a period of profound political and social change. It led to the end of the French monarchy, the establishment of a republic, and years of conflict before Napoleon Bonaparte rose to power. Unity uses fictional characters within this real historical framework.

The setting is sometimes confused with Assassin's Creed III, which takes place largely during the American Revolution. Unity is also distinct from Assassin's Creed Syndicate, whose nineteenth-century London setting reflects the Industrial Revolution. Ubisoft released Unity in 2014, and its cooperative missions allow multiple players to portray Assassins in revolutionary Paris.
