In Assassin’s Creed Unity, Paris is the city under investigation during the French Revolution.
The game follows Arno Dorian as he becomes involved with the Assassin Brotherhood amid the political and social upheaval of late-eighteenth-century France. Paris is recreated with major landmarks, crowded streets, districts, and revolutionary unrest forming the backdrop for the story.
Arno’s investigation connects murders and conspiracies to a Templar struggle within the revolutionary period. Historical figures, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Maximilien Robespierre, appear in the campaign, although the story combines documented history with fictional characters and events.
The setting is sometimes confused with other French cities because the revolution affected the whole country. Unity, however, is specifically built around Paris, while Marseille and Lyon are not its principal open-world setting.
