In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which ancient conflict provides the game’s main historical backdrop?

The story behind the answer

The Peloponnesian War provides the main historical backdrop for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The game is set in ancient Greece during the conflict between Athens and Sparta. Its story begins in 431 BCE, the traditional opening year of the war, and lets the player explore islands and mainland regions while taking part in battles connected to the wider struggle.

Odyssey allows the player to choose either Kassandra or Alexios as the playable mercenary. That character choice does not change the historical setting: both versions experience a Greece divided by the Athenian and Spartan conflict.

The Peloponnesian War lasted from 431 to 404 BCE, although periods of truce and shifting alliances complicated the fighting. The conflict should not be confused with the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage, which are associated with a different region and period.
