Edward Kenway becomes an Assassin in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Edward begins the story as a Welsh privateer and pirate seeking wealth and status during the early eighteenth-century Golden Age of Piracy. After becoming entangled with the Assassin-Templar conflict, he gradually learns the consequences of pursuing profit without loyalty or purpose.
His journey brings him into contact with Assassins including Mary Read, Adéwalé, and Ah Tabai. By the end of the story, Edward has accepted the Brotherhood's ideals and committed himself to the Assassin cause.
Edward is also connected to later series history: he is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the protagonist known as Connor in Assassin's Creed III. Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, is a different character.
