Edward Kenway is the central playable pirate in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes a pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. After acquiring an Assassin’s clothing and identity, he becomes entangled in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars while pursuing wealth and opportunity in the Caribbean.
The game is set primarily in the West Indies during the early 18th century. Its open world includes Havana, Nassau, Kingston, and extensive ocean areas where Edward commands the ship Jackdaw.
Edward is the grandfather of Connor Kenway, the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed III, and the father of Haytham Kenway. Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, is instead a historical pirate and one of Edward’s associates, which makes the two names easy to confuse.
